As I look back over my garden photos from last summer, I am becoming anxious for spring to arrive. Is January is too early to start thinking about ordering seeds and beginning my starts? I want to plant more at the ORLC community garden this year, but what can I plant there that will be more resistant to the grasshoppers that have made that area their home? Potatoes and pumpkins did well last year...

This morning in the garden the humming bird couple were doing their usual rounds. First checking out the bee balm and day lillies, then zooming up to the geraniums on the deck, and then diving down to the neighbor’s hanging feeder. They briefly paused on the edge of the fence giving me a good look before they bolted off to the next vibrant flower. In the front garden our family of robins...

It has been over a week since our chickens moved to a new home. I’m suprised how much I miss them. Saying goodbye is always the hardest part of moving. Now that I only have little over a week left it my garden, I have a lot of saying goodbye to do. I’m trying to harvest and cook as much as I can this week. But there will still be plenty left when I move. How do I say goodbye to plants?...

It is so exciting to go into the garden and find enough fresh produce for a full meal! The beets and carrots are in their prime and oh so tasty. I think most of the new chickens are finally laying eggs. We are getting 9 to 11 everyday. Lately, we’ve been getting several with double yolks. But I have discoverd it is very difficult to get chickens to hold still long enough to photograph.

I harvested quite a bit from the garden today, starting with my favorite rainbow colored silverbeet that got added to my scrabbled eggs. There was also more zuchinni to cut, two fat yellow squash, a half a pint of raspberries, a handfull of peas, magenta radishes, and the first beets of the season were pulled. I am almost overwhelmed by how vibrant colored the beets and radishes are. How can...

No sign of the raccoon that has been consuming our pond fish. I’ve tried two nights now with the live trap, but he remains at large. I’m a little worried that I might capture the skunk that frequents the west side of the garden. The strawberries seem to be slowing down but the raspberries are just starting to ripen. The chickens are happy as ever. We get about 9 eggs a day now. One...

The garden and the chickens are entering full production. The new chickens are starting to lay their eggs. So far there has been 5 small white eggs and two small brown eggs. I think the old white chicken got jealous, so she started to lay again. I’m getting about a pint of strawberries a day. Sometimes their sweetness is almost overwhelming. My peas are also starting to form. I might get 5...
